INDICTMENTS IN THE RUSSIA INVESTIGATION (FOLLOW UP)
INDICTMENTS IN RUSSIA INVESTIGATION – FOLLOW-UP
The sealed federal indictments handed down last Friday were opened today. Paul Manafort and Rick Gates were named in a 12 count indictment involving conspiracy cases in reference to such things as money laundering, tax evasion, and conspiring against the United States government. Both men turned themselves in to federal authorities and were placed on house arrest, only being allowed to leave home for such things as doctor’s appointments and religious meetings. Manafort was placed on 10 million dollar bond and Gates was granted a 5 million dollar bond. Most of the allegations describe improper conduct regarding transactions with the country of Ukraine. The indictment alleges funds were deposited in banks outside the United States in order to hide the defendants’ relationships with the Ukraine, a friend of Russia.
Manafort served as campaign chairman for the Trump for President campaign from May through August 2016 and Gates was a campaign advisor. He is said to be a protégé of Manafort.
Today it was made public that George Papadopoulus, who was said to be a foreign policy advisor to the Trump campaign, pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents. He pled guilty on October 3, 2017, but his plea was just announced today. Documents filed in federal court indicate Papadopoulus has spoken with the FBI on several occasions.
The implications of all this may be far reaching, or it could be the beginning of the end of the investigation. We will see what happens. Federal conspiracies can be very broad and co-conspirators may be added as the investigation continues. One of the big questions is whether or not these allegations address business operations, political endeavors, or a combination of the two!
We will discuss all of this further in upcoming articles.
